Catalogue Note

Horace Shipp wrote the following after seeing one of Seago's views of Hickling in the 1950s; 'There was something absolutely sincere in his quest for beauty, full of poetry, free from exaggeration and the over-intellectualization which is the current fashion; yet technically exciting, sure in its touch and actual craftsmanship, scholarly. Nature was neither flouted nor slavishly copied. The artist had neither intruded his personality, nor scrificed it. The work was traditional, yet new.' (James W.
