Catalogue Note

James W. Reid watched Seago paint this view of Kessingland, south of Lowestoft in December 1953 at his studio at Dutch House; 'On a cloudy December afternoon, he took out a primed linen canvas, put it on the easel under the skylight and clamped it into place. He opened his paint box, took out a few tubes of Winsor and Newton oil paints and squeezed a small amount of pigment from each tube on to his wooden palette. There were not many colours for this picture - flake white, indian red, alizarin crimson, yellow ochre, indigo and ultramarine blues. Mixing the indian red with the indigo, he deftly outlined a low horizon, some houses and several boats beached on the sand.' (James W. Reid, Edward Seago; The Landscape Art, 1991, pp. 171-172)
