Dame Laura Knight, R.A., R.W.S. 1877-1970

Royal Academy, Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by Dame Laura Knight DBE RA, 1965, no. 111

The oil painting of this subject, dated 1930 and exhibited at the Royal Academy that year, is illustrated in Janet Dunbar, Laura Knight, 1975, between pages 136 and 137. It is now at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery. The watercolour was painted at Bertram Mills Circus with whom Knight travelled in the early 1930s, until the company split up and he continued his travels with Carmo's Circus. The name of the acrobat was Herbert Hanson, whilst the clowns were called Joe Bert and Randy.
