Catalogue Note

In 1889 Arthur Hughes met John Brett, whilst on a painting holiday to Cornwall. Brett was staying with his family 'a mile or two away at Padstow... making beautiful studies about the ripples and rocks. ' (letter quoted in Leonard Roberts, Arthur Hughes; His Life and Works, 1997, pg. 32). Brett's A View of Treyarnon Bay (lot 210) was painted during the same holiday, and is an example of one of the studies Hughes would have seen. The influence of Brett's views of Cornwall is evident in The Yellow Sand, which was painted in 1891 when Hughes was staying at Boscastle.
