Catalogue Note

Brett spent the month of October 1873 at Bude, where he made at least eight 7 by 14 inch sketches. Many of them are related to his Academy picture of 1874, Bude Sands at Sunset (Detroit Art Gallery). The figure in the current work was incorporated into the larger picture, but placed a little further to the left.
