Catalogue Note

'The Thames barges were a theme to which the artist returned repeatedly, painting them with sails billowing during a race or furled alongside the hard at Pin Mill.' (James W. Reid, Edward Seago, The Landscape Art, 1991, p. 105) Pin Mill lies five miles east of Ipswich, on the river Orwell and was established in the 1950s as an area of artistic activity. The importance of Pin Mill to Seago has been compared to that of Argenteuil for Claude Monet.
