Thomas Sidney Cooper R.A. 1803-1902

Thomas Sidney Cooper painted two variants of this picture, differing only in minor details. One version dated 1831, incongruously titled Cattle in a Woody Landscape (oil on canvas, 48½ by 39 ins) was sold at Christie’s (26 July 1974, lot 287) and is listed in S. Sartin Thomas Sidney Cooper C.V.O.,R.A., 1976, p. 59, Cat. no.6. The other known version, painted in 1839 (oil on canvas, 50 by 40 ins.) was owned by Sir Pierce Lacy of Ampton Hill, Bury St Edmunds.
