Catalogue Note
Gechter here portrays two French infantrymen standing over the debris of Russian and Austrian equipment. The date inscribed on the base, 2 Décembre 1805, refers to Napoleon's greatest victory at the battle of Austerlitz. The defeat of the joint Russo-Austrian army resulted in the Treaty of Pressburg which dissolved the Holy Roman Empire.
