Nelson's daring action at The Battle of Cape St. Vincent resulted in him being made a Knight of the Bath.  Rear Admiral John Jervis led  a fleet of fifteen British ships-of-the-line into battle against a larger Spanish fleet under the command of Admiral Cordoba.  Having cut the enemy line there was a danger the disorganised Spanish fleet would regroup to mount a counter-attack.  With typical bravery and instinct Nelson wore H.M.S. Captain, out of line to attack the Spanish rear.  This left him vulnerable to no less than seven Spanish ships including the awesome 140-gun Santissima Trinidad.    Through superior gunnery, Nelson held his position until he was joined by the supporting Van.  However Captain had all but lost steerage and rammed the San Nicholas, Nelson immediately ordered a boarding party and having captured his first prize, led a second boarding party onto the San Josef.
Flag Captain Calder called Nelson's action 'unauthorised' to which Jervis responded 'It certainly was so...and if ever you commit such a breach of orders, I will forgive you also'.
