Catalogue Note
Colonel Paul Lewis Good of Van Wert, Ohio, was a prominent livestock auctioneer, breeder, and art collector. His interest in purebred livestock was a lifelong passion stemming from a childhood spent on the family’s shorthorn cattle farm. His early involvement in the Saddle and Sirloin Club, as well as home livestock projects like the county fair draft horse pulling contest, burgeoned into a successful career. The Colonel graduated from Ohio State University in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. As a specialist in Aberdeen Angus cattle and Arabian horses, he traveled the country auctioning purebred livestock. In 1956, the Colonel visited Canada to auction off a herd. While there, he learned of a collection of English primitive paintings belonging to Mr. E. E. Hutton of Bridgehouse, Suffolk. Mr. Hutton recognized a fellow connoisseur, and agreed to sell his collection to Colonel Good. This wonderful group became the nucleus for the Colonel’s lifelong passion for collecting paintings of purebred livestock.
