Catalogue Note

Haskell A. Duncan, a longtime resident of Moore County, North Carolina, was an ordained minister, hunter, farmer, businessman, investor, outdoorsman, conservationist and philanthropist.  Mr. Duncan and his wife shared a love of the outdoors, with a particular fondness for the eastern blue bird.  As a member of the National Bluebird Society, Mrs. Duncan was instrumental in covering the state of North Carolina with blue bird houses, as well as collecting and sharing the increasingly rare birds’ nesting data, and encouraging the development of nestbox trails.  Mrs. Duncan also loved horses, was an avid fox hunter and shower, and founded the local Moore County Pony Club.

The Duncan family property remains a 550 acre sanctuary for wildlife, especially for birds in general and for the blue bird in particular.  Today, it is preserved through a private foundation established by Mr. Duncan to ensure that it remains a friendly habitat for wildlife.

The Duncan’s love of nature manifested itself through their art collection.  Purchased throughout their life together, many paintings were acquired during hunting trips throughout the country, which augmented those they had inherited from family. The collection includes American artists spanning the Twentieth Century, representing a variety of subjects, but holding the outdoors as their central theme. The proceeds from the sale of Mr. Duncan’s collection will contribute toward the Foundation.
