Catalogue Note

An accomplished fox hunter and horseman, John Emms drew on his experiences in the hunt as inspiration for his subjects. His animals - especially the hounds - are painted with thick, fluid brushstrokes, which capture the textures of the coats of the different breeds. The individual personalities of the hounds are always conveyed with the warmth that Emms was so adept at depicting.
