Catalogue Note
Samokhvalov’s artistic talents spanned many disciplines including painting, theatre design, sculpture and decorative arts. His portraits of the female workers at the printing press which produced his posters came to represent the new ideal of the Russian female worker, conveying not only purpose, but great sensitivity and dignity. The offered portrait of the artist’s son displays the characteristics of Samokhvalov’s work during the first half of the twentieth century and is believed to have been executed in 1939.
This work is accompanied by a certificate of expertise from the Russian Museum.
