Catalogue Note
Having served as an apprentice to his father, a house-painter from Danzig, the young Eduard Hildebrandt moved to Berlin to work in the studio of Marine artist, Wilhelm Krause. Hildebrandt’s subject of choice however became the landscape, for which he is most famous. The offered lot is a rare seascape, clearly pointing to those early artistic influences.
The Pomeranian town of Swinemünde played an important role in maintaining good relations between Russia and Germany following the victory over Napoleon. In 1938 Tsar Nicholas I and his family stopped overnight in Swinemünde on their way from Berlin to St. Petersburg.
