Catalogue Note
Roller coasters first appeared in St. Petersburg in the sixteenth century and are still known in many languages as Russian mountains (montagnes russes). The earliest models were built of wood, and the surface of the steep decline would be covered with a thin layer of ice, which would allow a tobogan to travel down at great speed.
