Catalogue Note

A comparable landscape, depicting the coast near Salerno, is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (inv. no. 23355d; see C. Nordhoff and H. Reimer, Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807: Verzeichnis seiner Werke, Berlin 1994, cat. no. 620, fig. 285).  The Hamburg landscape is signed and dated 1770, and is drawn with the brush in a similarly fine manner, notably the sea, which has the same glassy effect.
