Catalogue Note
Some of De Vlieger's most attractive drawings are his depictions of dune and shore scenes, many of which are populated with lively groups of figures engaged in the sort of activities seen here. A signed example, in which the handling is very comparable to the present sheet, is in the Lugt Collection (see Eloge de la Navigation hollandaise au XVIIe siècle, Tableaux, Dessins et Gravures de la Mer et de ses Rivages dans la Collection Frits Lugt, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Institut Néerlandais, 1989, cat. no. 81, reproduced); another was sold from the collection of the British Rail Pension Fund, London, Sotheby's, 1 July 1991, lot 35. Also very comparable, though in red chalk, is a double-sided sheet of studies of various groups of fisherfolk, in the National Gallery of Scotland (inv. D 1270; see K. Andrews, Catalogue of Netherlandish Drawings in the National Gallery of Scotland, 2 vols., Edinburgh 1985, vol. I, p. 99, reproduced vol. II, figs. 671-2).
