Acquired from Aubrey Beese in 1965.

Catalogue Note

Genoels arrived in Rome in 1674, and this fantastical view is clearly inspired by his time in the campagna.  It may well have been made in preparation for a print (for examples of prints that he designed, see An Zwollo, Hollandse en Vlaamse veduteschilders te Rome: 1675-1725, Assen 1973, pp. 5-10).
