Catalogue Note

Birket Foster visited Spain and Morocco in the spring of 1883.  He travelled there with his friend, the artist Robert Dudley and his second son, William, arriving in Gibraltar on 2nd April.  From there the companions travelled by steamboat to Cadiz and then took the train to Seville, journeying on to Granada to see the Alhambra.

The Tocador de la Reina or 'Queen´s Boudoir' is situated between the Ambassadors Hall and the Harem of the Alhambra. This room was built for the Empress Isabella and was decorated with elaborate frescos.  Birket Foster greatly enjoyed his visit to the Alhambra, revealing in a letter to his eldest son on 26th May: 'The Alhambra, the woods full of nightingales, the glorious background of snow mountains, a good hotel and nice people make a thing not to be forgotton.'
