Catalogue Note

Roberts moved to London in 1822 and lived there for the rest of his life. He made a number of drawings of the city throughout his career, but he did not begin his great series of London views, including a number of important watercolours and oils of St Paul's, until the 1860's (see Helen Guiterman and Briony Llewellyn, David Roberts, 1986, p.102, nos.41, 42, 43 & 44). This sketch shows the view up Ludgate Hill to St Paul's from Ludgate Circus
