Catalogue Note

This may be the study for the more fully worked up watercolour, dated 1831, which was engraved by E.Finden for Landscape Illustrations of the Waverley Novels with Descriptions of the Views, published by Charles Tilt, London, 1832-34, page 239.  The building in the background is Heriots Hospital.  Greyfriars Churchyard has the richest concentration of early seventeenth century external monuments in Scotland.  The one on the left in this watercolour, with broken pediment, was made by master mason William Wallace.  Roberts was very interested in architecture and campaigned for the preservation of important monuments, as well as carefully recording them in his work
