Catalogue Note

Roberts' first trip to France was with his friend, John (Jock) Wilson in 1824, visiting Dieppe, Rouen and Le Havre.  French passports issued to Roberts in 1825, 1828 and 1829 relate to further sketching trips, and he also travelled to Belgium in 1826.  The 1825 passport records travel to Dieppe in August, where Roberts made studies of the church of St Jacques, and from whence he journeyed to Abbeville.  Several studies are known, dated 1825, of market buildings in Abbeville and the main church, St Wulfram
