  • watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour, stopping out and gum arabic

Catalogue Note

Mainz is one of the oldest cities in Germany and situated in the Grand Duchy of Hesse on the left bank of the Rhine, opposite the junction of the Maine.  Roberts made just one sketching tour in Germany in 1831, when he travelled up the Rhine.  He did, however, pass through the country on his way to and from Venice in 1851.  The church depicted here now houses the Museum of Natural History
