Catalogue Note
John Scarlett Davis married Elizabeth Jane Abbott on 12th July 1832. Their marriage was a happy one and she bore him three daughters and three sons, of whom only the daughters survived beyond infancy. Afterwards, the artist took his bride to Antwerp where it is likely he drew the portrait included in the present lot
