Catalogue Note

Whitby Abbey, founded in the seventh century, overlooks the  Northumbrian coastline. Although it was an important medieval site, in 1539, due to Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, it ceased to function as a religious centre.  In 1762, there was further disaster, when the central tower and west front collapsed leaving Whitby in a state of total ruin
