Catalogue Note

Varley's watercolour of Mr Heathcote's Mill at Tiverton, Devon, was executed after 1815, the date when John Heathcote acquired the mill.  The building was erected in 1793 and originally used as a cotton mill, but the proprietors struggled through twenty-two years of hardship, due to the Napoleonic wars, and in 1815 the managing partner committed suicide.  The factory was then sold to Heathcote who revived the fortunes of the town by introducing the first machine lace manufactory in Devon
