Catalogue Note

The boys depicted in front of a wall on which hang two miniature theorems of a fruit basket and a flower basket. Although they are dressed in the fashion of 1790-1820, the watercolor was probably done in Connecticut circa 1820-1825.

For a virtually identical image of boys playing marbles, see Katharine Morrison McClinton, Antiques of American Childhood, pp. 204-205. The image derives from J. Johnson's 1802 "Youthful Recreations," Philadelphia.
