Harkaway was a chestnut colt by Economist out of Fanny Dawson, a daughter of Nabocklish.  He was foaled in Ireland in 1834 and was described by a commentator as "a powerful, but coarse and angular looking horse; so much so indeed as to resemble a carthorse rather than a racer".  The colt was famed for his vast stride and astounding gallop.  He raced for Mr Fergusson and won eleven races in Ireland between 1837 and 1838, including the Royal Whip.  He was sent over to race at Goodwood in 1838 where he took the Cup, beating Hyllus, the Oaks winner Deception, and other good horses.  It was said to be one of the fastest renewals of the Goodwood Cup in history with Harkaway leading from pillar to post.  Altogether this remarkable Irish chestnut won a total of 25 races from 28 starts.  As a stud, Harkaway is best remembered as the sire of King Tom who became a champion stallion.
