Catalogue Note

The sitter was the daughter of Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon (1686 - 1764) and his second wife Henrietta, daughter of Charles Boyle, 3rd Earl of Cork.  She was brought up at Castle Martyr, in County Cork in Ireland, where her father was an important political figure holding the posts of Speaker of the House of Commons (1733 - 1756) and Chancellor of the Exchequer.  On 18th May 1745 she married Somerset Butler, 8th Viscount Kerrin and 1st Earl of Carrick (1718 - 1774), of Thomastown, County Kilkenny.
