Catalogue Note

Burgh Castle is situated close to Great Yarmouth at one end of Breydon Water, at the junctions of the Rivers Yare and Waveney.  Burgh Castle is a 3rd century Roman fort, and the thick stone walls visible in the present work defended the Roman camp.  Stannard painted a second view of Burgh Castle, and this work, signed and dated 1845 is in the museum at Great Yarmouth.
