Catalogue Note

De Boompjes means trees in Dutch, and the phrase became associated with the tree lined quayside portrayed in this work.  An engraving from circa 1700 reveals that the buildings along the quayside were the storehouses of the East India Company.  De Boompjes was severely bombed in the Second World War, and little survives.
