Catalogue Note
Birket Foster visited Scotland on many occasions and was often accompanied by various members of his family. In the Summer of 1869 he went with his father on a particularly long sketching tour of Scotland. They set off from London and visited Ely, Grantham, Lincoln, York and Durham on the way. They spent a few days in North Shields, where the artist had been born, before continuing their journey to Melrose, Abbotsford and Edinburgh. At Lanark Birket Foster drew the Falls of the Clyde and afterwards he sketched Dunblane Cathedral. They stopped again at Pitlochry before returning home through the Trossachs.
A watercolour by Birket Foster of Ben Venue and Ellen's Isle, Loch Katrine was exhibited in the Summer of 1889 at the Society of Painters in Water-colour
