William Callow R.W.S. 1812-1908

Between 1884 and 1892 Callow did not venture abroad and this watercolour of Venice, therefore, would have been based on earlier sketches.  Callow's first trip to the city was in the summer of 1840 (see note for lot 110).  He visited the floating city again on his honeymoon in 1846 (see lot 114) and returned there on many other occasions throughout his career making his last visit in 1892, at the age of eighty.
