Catalogue Note

Paolo Anesi was a pupil of Giuseppe Chiari and Sebastiano Conca and he studied landscape painting with Andrea Locatelli under Bernardino Fergioni. Anesi became a member of the Accademia in Florence in 1737 but his career was based in Rome, where his paintings were much admired by collectors. These included visitors on the Grand Tour and the Roman aristocracy, such as the Colonna, Pallavicini, Valenti Gonzaga, Pamphilij and Rondinini families, in whose collections his painting are recorded.
