Catalogue Note
The Ponte Cestio is one of two bridges which link the small Isola Tiberina to the City. Marlow travelled through France to Italy in 1765, and visited Rome, Naples and Florence where he made a number of drawings which he worked up into paintings on his return to England in 1766. His pictures of Rome are fewer in number than those of Florence and Naples, and tend, as here, to avoid standard views depicted by other artists. It is likely that this hitherto unrecorded painting dates from c. 1766-1777, quite early after his return to England.
We are grateful to Michael Liversidge for his help in cataloguing this painting.
