Catalogue Note

The present picture is derived from Vanvitelli’s composition of St. Peter's Square of which he painted at least fourteen versions dated between 1684 and 1721. These all derive from the same preparatory drawing (see G. Briganti, Gaspar van Wittel, Milan, 1996, pp. 169-173).
