Catalogue Note
John 'Gentleman' Jackson was the most famous pugilist in England of his time: Champion of England from 1795-1803. He was the son of a London builder. His first fight which lasted one hour and seven minutes was against Fewteral of Birmingham, and took place in 1798 at Smitham Bottom near Croyden. It was attended by the Prince of Wales. At his Coronation he and other prize fighters were dressed as pages and, so attired, guarded the entrance to Westminster Abbey. On his retirement he set up a Boxing Academy in New Bond Street.
