Catalogue Note
The artist Francis McComas was born in Fingal, Tasmania. He left Australia in 1898 and worked his way to San Francisco, where he studied with Arthur Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Institute Together with Arthur Putman and Mary Foote he was one of three Californian artists invited to exhibit at the Armory in New York in 1913. He specialised in landscapes of California and in Southwestern Indian subjects.
This painting may well be a view from near Belmont, the Sharon estate twenty five miles south of San Francisco.
