Catalogue Note

Schrader (see Literature) lists two autograph versions of this composition recorded in the collections at Schloss Blankenburg, both with slightly larger dimensions. She dates the design to circa 1762-65. It was this type of portrait, whose relaxed informality provided a real contrast to the formulaic court portraiture of the preceding decades, which earned Ziesenis his reputation. The eldest daughter of Duke Karl I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Sophie Caroline married Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in September 1759.
