Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Leopold Joseph, Duke of Lorraine and Elisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans. He succeeded as Duke of Lorraine (Lothringen) in 1729 following the early death of his brother. He married the Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria in 1736 and after the death of Charles VII succeeded as Holy Roman Emperor in 1745. He died unexpectedly on the 18 August 1765.
