Catalogue Note
The present painting is based on a work by Ruisdael in the collection of the Heirs of Hans P. Wertitsch, Vienna. Other variants by Ruisdael can be found in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Strasbourg and the Dent Brocklehurst collection, Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire.
This lot is accompanied by a photocertificate from W. R. Valentiner, dated May 27, 1958, stating the painting to be by Jacob Ruisdael and "belonging to his best early period about 1647-50." Another certificate from Jacob Kainen, dated October 28, 1971, also ascribes the present painting in full to Jacob Ruisdael.
