Rt. Hon. the Earl of Southesk;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, July 27, 1945, lot 73 (as Hans Holbein) to Gooden and Fox;
Anonymous sale ("The Property of a Gentleman"), London, Chrisite's, June 26, 1959, lot 26 (as Circle of Holbein), for 150 Guineas to Dent
The present portrait most likely copies a lost Holbein original that was probably painted by a Holbein copyist or imitator working around 1600.
This lot is accompanied by a photocertificate from Leo C. Collins, dated February 18, 1960, stating that in his opinion the portrait is by Hans Holbein, the Younger and dates to the master's late English period.
