Catalogue Note

The present painting repeats in composition a work by Guardi in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.  The subject of the present gouache and the Alte Pinakothek work is the performance by eighty girls of the foundling hospitals for Grand Duke Paul , son of Catherine II of Russia, and his wife, organized by the Republic of Venice on January 20, 1782.

It has been suggested that the present painting may be by Giuseppe Ponga (Chiogga 1865-1925 Venice).
