Follower of Francesco Guardi

The depiction of a Portico is based on a work by Guardi in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris (see A. Morassi, Guardi, I dipinti, Venice 1984, vol. I, cat. no. 801, reproduced vol. II, fig. 729).  The Ruined Arch is based on a composition used numerous times by Guardi depicting the same arch (op. cit., vol. I, cat. nos. 956-63, reproduced vol. II, figs. 845-9, 854, 856-7).  The Rustic Cottage derives from Guardi's work in the V. Cini collection, Venice (ibid., vol. I, cat. no. 846, reproduced vol. II, fig. 765) and, lastly, the Port Scene with Ruined Columns appears to be loosely based on the central portion of a larger composition by Guardi in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (ibid., vol. I, cat. no. 924, reproduced vol. II, fig. 817).
