This subject was treated on a number of occasions by Loth: in oval form in a canvas at Pommersfelden, together with an upright adaptation of it in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, and in horizontal format in a canvas in private collection in Italy, formerly that of Conte Segrè-Sartorio, Trieste (see G. Ewald, Johann Carl Loth, Amsterdam 1965, pp. 118-119, cat. nos. 514-516). This particular canvas is identical in composition and, given that it was once an oval, may indeed be one and the same picture as a painting formerly in a private collection, Berlin (Ewald, op. cit., cat. no. 513, reproduced plate 66; for provenance and literature relating to the Berlin picture and therefore possibly relevant to the present work, see Ewald, ibid., p. 118, cat. no. 513).
