An identical stool is illustrated, Jarry & Devinoy, Le Siège Français, Fribourg, 1973, p. 333, pl. 336. It, with a number of others, was delivered for the Chateau de Compiègne. Rope twist stools and chairs were the height of fashion during the Second Empire.
