A pair of George II style red, yellow and gold-painted and mahogany silk-upholstered couch beds

each canopy with pagoda top and silk-lined interior, the fret-carved posts on outscrolled upholstered sides.

These beds are copies of a pair made for the Hon. Francis Charteris of Armsfield, Scotland, circa 1758, a subscriber to Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, 1754.  A drawing, now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for a ‘Chinese Sopha’ and published in Chippendale’s Director, 1754, pl.
