Catalogue Note
The design for the present lot is derived from Robert Adam’s ‘Design of a Sideboard Table and Wine Cistern for the Right Honble. W. G. Hamilton’s Dining Room at Brighton’, 1787, with strigil carving to the base, the sides mounted with lion’s-head masks. A similar wine cooler at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, is illustrated, C. Musgrave, Adam and Hepplewhite and other Neo-Classical Furniture, London, 1966, fig.168, pp. 213-214. Another similar wine cooler from The Collection of Sir Basil Montgomery, is illustrated, M. Harris, A Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Decorative Art, part III, p. 391.
