Catalogue Note
The present painting includes real and fictional architectural elements. The sculpture in the center is the work of Martin Desjardins (1637-1694). It represented Louis XIV triumphant over the countries submissive to France (the Empire, Spain, Brandenburg and Holland) depicted by four monumental bronze figures. Reliefs and medallions illustrating the conquests of the King further adorned the group. Unveiled in 1685 in the Place des Victoires, the statue of the King was destroyed during the Revolution but several elements are preserved and exhibited in the Louvre.
