Catalogue Note

Mar-A-Lago and Marjorie Merriweather Post

Mar-A-Lago is an historic Palm Beach house built on a site which Marjorie Merriweather Post bought in 1924. This 17 acre property is bounded by the Lake Worth on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Mrs. Post employed the Viennese architect Josef Urban to design the house and to some extent, the interior decoration of the rooms. For the actual furnishings of the rooms, Mrs. Post used the New York firm of French & Company. The lighting fixtures came from the New York firm of Edward F. Caldwell & Co. Completed in 1927, Mar-a-Lago was a glittering backdrop for the costume balls and parties for which Mrs. Post and her then husband, E.F. Hutton, were famous. Mrs. Post used the house throughout the 1950s and 1960s; on her death in 1972, she left the estate to the Federal Government with the express wish that it might be used by important US officials and foreign dignitaries. Unable or unwilling to pursue this, the government returned the property to the Post Foundation and it was eventually acquired by Donald J. Trump in 1995.
